Summer days in Columbus, Texas are, as we all know, hot. You and your family are bound to spend most of it outside. Stay protected from the sun’s harmful rays with the best SPF. Check out these sunscreen tips from The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Full Protection
The sun gives off ultraviolet-A (UVA) and ultraviolet-B (UVB) rays. These rays cause sunburn, skin damage, and even increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Your sunscreen should protect against both. Opt for protection with zinc oxide or titanium oxide to help block the harmful rays.
Top Protection
You are probably familiar with SPF. Did you know it stands for Sun Protection Factor? It absorbs and reflects the harmful rays. It is recommended to get an SPF of 30 or higher to spend the day in the sun without causing sunburns or skin damage.
Proper Application
Sunscreen can be applied in different ways. There are lotions, sprays, and even solid sticks. No matter what kind you purchase, you want to make sure you are applying it properly and frequently enough. Sunscreen only lasts a few hours. Lather on an ounce of lotion every two hours for the best protection. If you are using a spray, re-apply every hour to an hour and a half. If you are around water or sweating, you should also apply more frequently.
Physical Protection
Sunscreen is not the end-all-be-all of sun protection. It can’t completely prevent burns, damage, or skin cancer. Other protection steps to take include wearing an SPF 30 lip balm, a wide-brim hat, large sunglasses with UV protection, and even a long sleeve sun-protective shirt.
Remember to take a break from the sun and heat and go inside for cool air and cold water. With these tips, your summer is sure to be all smiles.
